Bogd Khan Mountain & Manzushir monastery
We will pick you up from your hotel and begin our journey to Zuunmod, the capital of Tov Province, located about an hour’s drive from Ulaanbaatar. This small administrative town will be our first stop.
From Zuunmod, we continue to Manzushir Monastery, set on the slopes of Bogd Khan Mountain, just 8 km away. The area is peaceful and scenic, with rolling hills covered in pine, cedar, and birch trees. Dramatic granite rock formations surround the monastery, creating a truly magical atmosphere.
Founded in 1733, Manzushir Monastery once consisted of over 20 temples and housed around 350 monks. Sadly, it was destroyed during the Stalinist purges of 1937. Today, the main temple has been rebuilt and functions as a museum, while the remaining structures lie in atmospheric ruins scattered across the valley.
After exploring the museum and learning about the monastery’s history and legends, we will spend the afternoon hiking through the ruins and the Bogd Khan Mountain area. Those feeling adventurous can climb the hill behind the monastery for a panoramic view of the valley, dotted with granite boulders and forested with oak, birch, and cedar trees.
In the late afternoon, we return to Ulaanbaatar, bringing the day to a close.
